What Is It?
There is a great need for physicians–now and in the future–and we recognize that the challenges facing pre-med students can be overwhelming and confusing. In 2022, Anderson University and AnMed established a partnership to introduce a Pre-Med Boot Camp. This two-week camp aims to offer resources and advice to South Carolina undergraduate students to prepare them for medical school.
We believe that finances and lack of opportunity should never stop a motivated individual from preparing for medical school, so we offer the camp at zero cost to participants.

● Shadowing opportunities with AnMed medical professionals across many disciplines
● Many hands-on, skill-based workshops, some of which include reading EKGs, intubation, catheterization, and joint injection
● MCAT prep materials
● Access to AU’s cadaver lab
● Interview practice
● Discussion panels with physicians, current med school students, and representatives from the admissions committees from the four South Carolina medical schools
Housing
For students who travel to AU to attend, free housing is provided on campus for the duration of the camp.
Who should apply?
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who are passionate about pursuing a career in medicine. Although we do have specific standards, we acknowledge that each person’s path and experiences are unique. Please do not let the fact that you may not meet our criteria exactly discourage you from applying. Our goal is to bring together a diverse group of people working toward the common goal of attending medical school.
● On a pre-med track with the specific intention of going to medical school (preference is given to students that plan to attend a med school in South Carolina)
● A rising junior or senior undergraduate student
● Current GPA of 3.5 or higher
● Has–or will have–reliable transportation during the camp, for traveling between AnMed’s campuses, the AU campus, and shadowing experiences

What are the benefits of attending?
- Meet other students interested in medical school from across the Upstate.
- Participate in sessions led by the four medical schools in South Carolina on their school and the admission process.
- Listen to panels with physicians about their journeys to medical school and ask questions about their specialties.
What is the cost of attending?
There is no cost to attend, unless students elect to pay $150 to have a private room. Students are responsible for their own transportation costs to and from the camp and during the camp. Students are responsible for their own food costs during the experience. Lunch is provided for a few days, but all other meals are at their own expense.
What's included in the cost?
All of the experiences and housing.

Additional Information
The Health Profession Student program offers community-based training experiences to students, providing them with exposure to working in rural and underserved areas of South Carolina. Through collaboration with health professions programs in the state, the South Carolina AHEC Health Professions Student Program offers community-based education to undergraduate and graduate students. This education is designed to expose students to the realities of clinical practice in underserved areas and to introduce them to communities as a focus for health improvements. Regional HPS coordinators are available to facilitate student placements, orient students to communities, and organize student projects.
In addition, we offer the AHEC Scholars program, which allows health profession students from diverse disciplines and institutions throughout the state to work together. The South Carolina AHEC Scholars program is part of a national effort to prepare future health professionals to be leaders in interdisciplinary and transformative practice, with a focus on serving those in need. The program includes both classroom and hands-on training, with an emphasis on primary care and serving rural and underserved communities. AHEC Scholars are given priority for unique, team-based clinical fieldwork opportunities, as well as opportunities to connect with primary care professionals and state leaders throughout the state.

The Health Careers Program (HCP) supports diverse groups of students on their paths to becoming healthcare professionals, building a future healthcare workforce that will reflect the diverse range of communities it serves in South Carolina. Emphasis is placed on supporting underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students on their paths to careers in healthcare in order to address disparities in the healthcare workforce. Our programs are designed to provide students with academic preparation, skills development and career exploration to develop successful future healthcare professionals. The Upstate AHEC Health Careers Program includes the Health Careers Academy (HCA), a four year, interactive, academic-based program and the Summer Enrichment Program, an integrative summer internship program where students shadow, volunteer, and explore the healthcare environment.
